Optometrist, Chewing Gum, Apple Pie, and Family

The optometrist's office holds a lot of memories for us kids. As youngsters, each of our frequent visits would find us skipping right through the door and around the desk into the office just to sniff out that one special drawer....... Hmmmm...Yup! That's the one! And there, laying right where it always was...CHEWING GUM!!! : ) (Thanks, Exie!) And what made us so special? The optometrist is our aunt, y'know. : )
Of course, we could tell about Sara's first eye exam.... Aunt Crystal handed her a black thing and told her to hold it over her right eye. "Okay, now what can you see?" Sara could see nothing. "Hold it over your other eye....Now what can you see?" Again, she could see nothing. By this time everyone was getting a little worried. Was she blind??? After a few minutes of frenzy, Sara realized that the thing she was holding over her eye wasn't meant to help her see better after all. Instead of covering the one and seeing with the other, she was covering the one and closing the other!
This past Friday (Nov. 14th), we took a trip to Conover to get our eyes examined. It was a family affair, to be sure. : )

There was a lot of trying on all the newest styles and colors to see which was the best shape and shade.....

And then there was some goofing and playing as well. : )

Getting a bit stylish, eh??? : )

We had a wonderful time with Aunt Crystal!

After all was finished and the glasses were returned to what we thought might be the right place, we headed over to Ma Maw and Pa Paw's house for a delicious lunch of chicken pie, coleslaw, potatoes, greenbeans, etc. with two of the best tasting apple pies for dessert. Can't beat Ma Maw's cookin'....especially with all the love she sprinkles in!
It was soooooo good to spend time with family!

Fair Game for a Game???

A game of Parcheesi always makes for a fun night! Occasionally called "Par-cheat-si" around here, it has found its place on the list of the family favorites. And the pawn choices are????......."Daddy, do you want tigers, elephants, humpbacks, or thingy-ma-jiggits?"

Happy (Belated) Birthday!

We're getting a little behind, but better late than never, right???

****************************************************

****************************************************

Birthday cake gets monotonous after about the second birthday in a row, so we try to be creative when the grand occasions roll around.....even when we are a little late on celebrating them! : ) We love you, Ray! Happy Birthday!

Camping Firebug Goes Bananas!

Last weekend (Nov. 6-8), our family went camping!! We haven't been camping in several years, but the Lord blessed us with a few days to get away. Oh, sure, we "practiced" with an overnight stay several weeks ago : ), but this time we got to stay two nights.....thus allowing time to build a campfire and do all the other "campin' stuff" as well.

Allison was dubbed the firebug. : ) Really, it's a miracle she was even able to tolerate the smoke let alone constantly mess in the fire. She certainly enjoyed it!! It was her job to gather everything we would need to start the fire -- kindling, wood, pinecones, etc.

Soap, ple-e-e-e-ease!!

The fire required our undivided attention for several hours, but once it started burning the actual wood and not just the kindling, even the rain didn't put it out.

The first thing you think of when building a campfire is roasting marshmallows, but, not having any of those on hand, we opted for roasted apples and bananas. : )

Instead of playing "Where's Waldo" we can play "Where's the Banana". : )

Mmmmmmmmmm..........what can compare with eating of the "fruit of your labors"? ...no pun intended! : )

Ray, Sr., Ray Jr., and Sara spent some time on our land that Friday and Saturday scouting it out and seeing exactly what was around. So while the cats were away, the mice, of course, played. The remaining few visited the little museum at the campground which told about the surrounding "bay areas".

We also walked out on the pier. The Cypress trees growing out of the water were so beautiful in their fall colors!

Can you see the bottom of the lake?

Allison's Story!

Allison has had Asthma since she was about 5 years old, but it was always easily controlled. She had never had much trouble with allergies other than an occasional bout when she would be exposed to alot of dust or hold a cat. Then, in April, 2007, she had an anaphylactic reaction one night after supper and had to be rushed to the hospital. For about 6 months prior to her severe reaction, she had been having tongue and throat itching after eating certain foods and would eliminate those foods from her diet, one by one. After her initial anaphylactic reaction, things started getting worse and none of her doctors could explain why, or help her. They tried to help, but she was eliminating more and more different foods from her diet, but having more and more swelling.

Allison has been going to a new doctor now for about 9 weeks, and he does things a little differently than the conventional doctors. We have seen great improvement in her health. Many times, the nutritional aspect of healing is tied to Eastern Religion. I want to make sure that you know that we DO NOT believe that nutrition and healing have anything to do with Eastern Religion. Allison's doctor is a Christian and understands that God is the Great Physician. The doctor she is going to, uses Nutrition Response Testing to analyze her body's need. He doesn't give new meds, but she is taking whole food supplements and eats foods that are minimally processed without added chemicals. Why did we choose this route? Allison's allergist in Charlotte said he had exhausted all of his resources and we needed to find another allergist that could perhaps help her. Her allergist in Hickory really didn't know how to help, either. They were giving her samples of new meds to try, but she was either allergic to some of the ingredients and couldn't take them, or had a reaction to the medicine. Allison has had an anaphylactic reaction to prednisone, has had an anaphylactic reaction to the new HFA inhaler, and can only take liquid dye free Benadryl. We were at wits end. She was swollen most of every day and had come to the point that she could eat only 3 foods. A friend of ours has a son that has severe allergies and has been in the hospital many, many times. Their son was rapidly improving under the care of this doctor, and they recommended that we take Allison to him. I must tell you that our attitude toward this approach was, "Oh well! It only costs $35. What can it hurt. We'll go for entertainment." We never thought this doctor could help her. We are so thankful that we were wrong!

Now for the wonderful news! Allison has added several foods to her diet. Here is the list of the things she can eat: Chicken, potatoes, pork, broccoli, grapes, raisins, cabbage, lettuce, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, green peppers, eggs, pineapple, butter, and sweet ONIONS! She used to have a reaction if there was an onion in the same building as she was and now she can eat them! She hasn't been able to eat bread for almost 2 years, but now she can eat Ezekiel 4:9 bread. (It is made from sprouted grains and contains NO flour or preservatives.) What a blessing! She can actually eat a meal, because instead of one food at a time, she is now able to eat many of these foods at the same meal. She brushed her teeth with toothpaste yesterday for the first time in a year and DIDN'T SWELL. Allison feels sooooo much better and is full of life instead of sitting around like a zombie. We give God the glory for all that He is doing in her life.

We are still very careful with what we feed Allison, and she still takes her own food everywhere she goes. We know that it may take a little time for her to heal completely, but she is well on her way and IMPROVING!! God is always good and has been faithful to supply our every need during this time of trial. We are so thankful that God is allowing Allison to heal, but we are also willing to accept whatever He may place in our lives to bring glory to Himself!

I have posted some pictures that aren't very pretty, but they will give you an idea of the trial Allison has been going through.

This was taken during one of Allison's numerous reactions. She couldn't open her mouth any wider because it was full of swollen tongue. It was impossible for her to get her tongue completely in her mouth.

No, she's not pouting! Her face and lips are swollen from a reaction.

At Allison's first visit with her new doctor, we learned that her liver was stressed and not functioning properly. She tested for chlorine and mercury, and is taking supplements to push these out of her system. Saturday night when she got in the shower she was fine, but when she got out of the shower, she had a raw spot on the back of her right hand. We couldn't figure out what she did. It looked like a round "carpet burn". Sunday night, about 24 hours later, she had one on her foot. Really strange! Monday morning, about 8 hours later, she had 2 on the other hand and one on her other foot. We took her in to see the doctor and he explained that her body was pushing the metals out too fast. We stopped some of her supplements and after several more spots appeared (including a few on her face), she stopped breaking out. They are still quite painful, but at least there aren't any new ones.

PLEASE CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR ALLISON!

Ish-be-nashty! (...But We Voted!)

Today was the girls' day out....all because we voted! : ) We planned our route well, first going to the places where we just had to show our I Voted stickers as opposed to giving them up. Our first stop was at Books-a-Million to get our free Cup o' Joe hazelnut coffee (sweetened with stevia, of course). We're not coffee drinkers, but, hey, it was free! It's not every day that you get to take a girls' day out for FREE!

Our next stop was Krispy Kreme to get our free star-shaped, iced doughnuts with sprinkles on top. We even got free hats! I must insert here that we haven't been eating sugar....some of us for up to two and a half months. You would be shocked at how fast your taste changes! The unanimous vote??? "Ish be nashty!"

We were ready for a change of tastes by then. No more sugar!....we thought. : ) Chicken sandwich, here we come! And where would you go to get a chicken sandwich???? Chick-fil-a, of course! We went to the Chick-fil-a in the mall in Gastonia only to find that they weren't honoring the "get a free chicken sandwich if you voted" deal. : ( But they did give us a sticker for a free large coke! : )

Logically, our only recourse was to head to Shelby where they simply could not refuse us the coveted goodies.....right?!? As you can tell, we were duely rewarded for our perserverance. It was about 1:30 by then, and we were ready for lunch!

On our way home, we stopped by the Chick-fil-a in the Shelby mall and got some chicken sandwiches there. Ray Sr. and Jr. were going to be hungry when we got home! Some, as you can see, were hungry enough as it was. : )

Good times must always come to an end, and we were becoming a little weary of being indulgent voters. Make the best of the opportunity, we thought, as it only comes but once in a blue moon. I know, I know, "Yield not to temptation".....but as Mom says, " I wasn't tempted ~ I knew I was going to do it." : ) Besides, we had some pretty happy menfolk when we got home! : )

What a treat after a hard day at work!!

Try It Again for the First Time

Thursday, when we came home from the polls, we made several phone calls to the State Board of Elections as well as the County Board of Elections, and both said that Sara should have been allowed to register and vote. They decided to disapprove the provisional ballot and allow her to go register and vote the normal way. So off to the polls again, only this time armed with a list of the acceptable forms of identification in addition to her former paraphenalia.

More paperwork...

More questions...

Another ballot...

Another I Voted Early sticker to take to Chick-fil-a and Krispy Kreme. : )

Your Vote Counts!

We all remember the very first time we ever went to vote, don't we? A little nervous.....a little unsure of ourselves.....maybe even a little scared? Checking over our ballot about ten times before we leave the booth.....watching the machine suck it into its deep, dark insides along with the thousands of others.....then.....Whew! The number changed! Of course you can't forget the I Voted Early sticker that you can take to Chick-fil-a on Election Day and get a free chicken sandwich then to Krispy Kreme and get a free doughnut. Now that's getting rewarded for your efforts! : ) Amid all this, the very last thing that you need is for something to go wrong.

This year the ones who hadn't registered to vote yet were allowed to do so at the early voting stations, and Sara was one of those. So today, off to vote we went. We were armed with our lists of who we were going to vote for, and Sara was armed with all of her identification. To make a very long story short, Sara didn't have the identification they thought she needed (although they were listed as acceptable forms) and had to fill out a lot of paperwork.

Two hours after arriving, she was able to fill out a provisional ballot and cast her very first vote.

But it WILL count!

Great Is Thy Faithfulness

"I will sing of the mercies of the LORD forever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations."

Psalm 89:1

When we returned from Florida, the Lord had a wonderful surprise waiting for us......our land in Bladen County had been surveyed!!!! We have been waiting for so long that it hardly seems possible. : ) Thank you to all who have been so faithful to pray for us and this need.

The Lord is faithful to supply each and every need that we have and blesses us in overabundance! He knows what we have need of even before we ask it......even before we know that we need it. The surveyer told us that we had a beautiful piece of property, and we all agree whole-heartedly! : )

When we found out that the land was surveyed, we immediately planned a trip to begin clearing the lines. Faith Baptist Church in Wilmington was so gracious to allow us to use their prophet's chambers for the six days that we were there. Saturday, we met with the surveyer to get a feel for where the lines were, then the work began.

It almost looks like we had some aliens from outer space coming for a visit. : ) We found that we don't have a single mosquito out there in Bladen County.......they're all married and have LARGE families. : ) And LARGE can be referring to the quantity and the size! As Ray Sr. described them, they looked like B-52 bombers. These mosquito nets came in handy until a mosquito got trapped inside. Ooooops!

This is after being back there for only about a half an hour. : O

Not only has the Lord blessed us with the land, but the back half is full of large hardwoods...not to mention the beautiful Cypress trees. Everything comes into
perspective when you put Ray Jr. up against it! : )

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
While staying at Faith, we had the opportunity to minister in their Sunday services. Then on Wednesday morning we went to Claire Bridge, an Alzheimer's senior community, and ministered to the dear people there. We had a wonderful time!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We are looking forward with great anticipation to the day that we will finally be able to move out to Bladen County and start the church there! We know that the Lord is leading us step by step, and He has been so faithful to strengthen us and to provide for us all the way. It is such a blessing to be able to step back and watch the Lord work all the details out in His perfect timing!

There have been preparations in progress for the hunting season. Maybe the Lord will provide us with some fresh meat as well....... : )

There's nothing like setting up a tree stand in the front yard in the middle of the city!
